SUMMARY
 
The ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a tool that allows the detection of different interfaces such as sedimentary laminae of stratification, fractures, humic horizons, etc., in the subsurface. A transverse representative GPR profile was recorded to characterize different internal sets of laminae in the aeolian dune field of Xagó (Asturias).We also discuss various aspects of the use of GPR in this environment: the method capabilities, limitations and possible solutions. The consistency between the radargram results and several previous observations about the geomorphology and vertical outcrops of old trenches confirm the utility of GPR in this coastal environment. Furthermore, the location of a possible erosive surface or organic horizon, unknown until now, and other stratigraphic evidences can improve knowledge about the evolution of this dune field, including progradation and retrogradation processes which will be extrapolated to other nearby field.
