SUMMARY

Fluid injection or extraction in a porous medium is an extremely important problem for different fields: groundwater use, artificial recharge and CO2 capture, just to mention a few. The hydrogeological monitoring of these events is expensive or simply impossible in many instances. The mass variation linked to the piezometric head change generates gravimetric anomalies that can be detected using modern existing microgravity instruments of improved precision offering, therefore, a complementary monitoring strategy. This paper describes how a finite element numerical simulation of an injection/extraction process in a porous media can be coupled to the corresponding gravimetric simulation of its anomaly. This is performed using COMSOL. The result allows the use of microgravity measurements for calibrating hydraulic parameter or, at least, for adding consistency to the process, and to follow the evolution of the fluid in the medium in the case of complex geometries and using finite elements.
