Research lines

The Hydrogeophysics Modelling and Non Destructive Testing Unit focuses both on methodological developments and real applications along three research lines:

  • Flow and transport of energy and substances in porous media. Examples are: characterization of aquifers for water supply; mining dewatering projects; Quantitative assessment of flow and heat transport in underground mines after closure or flow and transport of substances through membranes.
  • Geophysical detection and assessment of underground targets. For instance: underground void detection (carstic or mine related voids); detection and characterization of ore bodies with interest for mining; Assessment of gas underground sequestering options; Location of fractured materials with fluid bearing capacity, pipe detection; Forensic and archaeological applications.
  • Non destructive inspection for evaluation of the inner state of manufactured materials. For example, evaluation of the integrity state of the walls of certain industrial facilities employing elastic waves in the acoustical range.

The group is actively involved with the germination, promotion and organization of every activity implying free inquire, open and educated reflection and the application of the science methodology to issues of importance for society. This general statement, consistent with the university character, is singled out in different aspects as:

  1. Consideration is given to the interaction space and open debate, complementarity and honest collaboration. This is, in its profound spirit, NOT JUST a production entity. Here, high quality ignorance is so important as what is thought to be known and it is just the thing deserving time and mind for discussion.
  2. Formation events are frequently and periodically organized among researchers, teachers and students. Open to everybody with a sincere interest.
